Corsairs and Lancers Ready to Duel at Cressy

NEED A BOUNCE BACK
After suffering its first loss of the season last week at Framingham State, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football team is back at Cressy Field for a noon kickoff against Worcester State. The Lancers are coming off their first win of the year over Fitchburg State.

LAST TIME OUT
  • UMass Dartmouth struck first, but Framingham State put up 38 straight points to put the game out of reach by the end of the third quarter.
  • Sophomore quarterback Dante Aviles-Santos threw for 195 yards and a touchdown.
  • Freshman Marvens Jean rushed for 48 yards and a score.
  • 5th-year senior Douglas Machado finished with 67 yards and a TD.
  • Junior wide receiver Diondre Ellis tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to junior Luis Gonzalez as well.
  • On defense, 5th-year senior Marcus Elysee led the Corsairs with nine tackles, while 5th-year senior Sean Reall had eight and senior Javien Delgado collected seven tackles.
  • Aviles-Santos connected with Machado for a 57-yard touchdown pass and catch to give the Corsairs a 7-0 advantage with 13:47 on the clock.
  • Framingham then scored its 38 points in a variety of ways.
  • UMass Dartmouth crossed the plane two more times, but the Rams scored one more touchdown in the fourth to finish things off.
OFFENSIVE LEADERS
  • The Corsairs still have the best offense in the MASCAC.
  • UMass Dartmouth is first in the conference with 409 yards per game, 14 touchdowns, and the team is second with 30 points per game.
  • The Corsairs are the second-best rushing team in the MASAC, averaging 155.3 yards per game. Junior Luis Gonzalez is second in the league with 76 ypg, while freshman Marvens Jean ranks fourth with 54 ypg.
  • Aviles-Santos leads the conference in total touchdowns with nine, eight of those are through the air. The QB is also third in the MASCAC with 216 passing ypg.
  • 5th-year senior Douglas Machado is second in the conference with three receiving touchdowns and ranks third with 115.7 receiving ypg.
  • Freshmen Mike Vincent and Antonio Brown are tied for third in the league with two touchdown catches each.
DEFENSE BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Corsairs are fourth in the MASCAC with 29.3 points allowed.
  • UMassD is tied for the league lead in interceptions (3) and is second in sacks (4).
  • Freshman Sam Alicea leads the MASCAC with three of those sacks.
  • UMass Dartmouth is tied for first with three interceptions. Sophomores Trell Best, Jackson Wellman and Logan Chappell all have one pick.
SCOUTING WORCESTER
  • Through their first three games of the year, Worcester State is 1-2 with losses at WPI (38-20) and No. 14 Union (62-13). Their lone win was a home game against Fitchburg State (38-35).
  • The lancers have a high-powered offense led by Sophomore wide receiver Ke'Vaughn Davis, who leads the MASCAC with 144 receiving ypg and four touchdown grabs.
  • Sophomore quarterback Mike Loveless leads the league with five rushing touchdowns, while senior QB Aaron-Moses Williams is second in the MASCAC with 258 passing yards per game.
  • The key so far to beating Worcester State is the run game. The Lancers have the worst rush defense in the MASCAC, allowing 277.3 ypg.
  • If you flip the coin and look at their pass defense, it's the best in the league, giving up just 107.7 ypg in the air.
  • In total, Worcester is last in defense in the MASCAC, allowing 45 points per game.
LANCERS' LAST TIME OUT
  • Trailing 35-7 just before halftime, Worcester State scored 31-unsanwered points to come from behind and defeat Fitchburg State last week in front of their home crowd.
  • Fitchburg went up 35-7 with 2:41 left in the first half. The only Lancer score early in the game was a 1-yard rush from Loveless.
  • Worcester State flipped the script after that. Moses Williams connected with Davis for a 26-yard score and a 68-yard TD. Loveless then ran in three more touchdowns, two from two yards out and one from nine yards.
ALL-TIME AGAINST WORCESTER
  • Dating back to 1988, the Corsairs hold a 12-8 record over the Lancers with a gap from 2004-2012.
  • UMass Dartmouth has won the last two meetings in 2018 (41-27) and 2019 (46-8).
