Corsairs Win 3rd Straight, Defeat Roger Williams, 3-1

Box Score

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team registered three first-half goals to defeat visiting Roger Williams on Thursday evening at Cressy Field.

The Corsairs held a 16-5 advantage in shots and a 15-3 lead in penalty corner opportunities. UMass Dartmouth recorded its third consecutive win to improve to 8-2 overall, while the Hawks fell to 4-6.

The Corsairs utilized a penalty corner to create their first scoring chance of the night. Sophomore Haley Donahay (Cranston, R.I.) inserted the restart to senior Emily Anderson (Medway, Mass.) along the left flank. Anderson's attempt was blocked by a charging defender, but freshman Ciara Anderson (Medway, Mass.) drilled the rebound into the back of the net to stake the hosts to an early 1-0 advantage.

UMass Dartmouth doubled its lead in the 21st minute, when senior Caroline Daubitz (Agawam, Mass.) placed a shot towards the left post. Sophomore Delaney Burns (Wayne, N.J.) batted the attempted inside the near, left post for her fifth marker of the season.

Just before the halftime intermission, the Corsairs used the same recipe as their second tally. This time, junior Hunter Carden (Branford, Conn.) fired an attempt to the left post that sophomore Erin Kish (Littleton, Mass.) deflected into the back of the cage. It was Kish's team-leading eighth goal of the campaign.

UMass Dartmouth continued to control the pace of play throughout the second stanza, but Roger Williams was able to get on the board in the 63rd minute. Sophomore Lillian McNeil (Marshfield, Mass.) unleashed a shot from well past the apron that the Corsair defensive backfield was going to let harmlessly bounce into the net, but junior Katherine Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn.) was able to slightly redirect the bounding ball, thereby cutting the visitors' deficit to 3-1.

Junior Sam Brun (Dighton, Mass.) made three saves in her 2015 debut to earn the victory, while freshman Mya Lunn (Marion, Mass.) registered four stops.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, when the Corsairs travel to Little East Conference rival Southern Maine.
