Box Score MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team opened the 2015 season with a 2-1 victory over Salve Regina University this afternoon. The Corsairs handed Linee Mello-Frost '11 a win in her collegiate head coaching debut.
UMass Dartmouth (1-0) cracked the scoring column in the 24th minute, when senior Jill Levrault (Somerset, Mass.) forced a turnover during a Seahawk breakout. Sophomore Delaney Burns (Wayne, N.J.) capitalized on the defensive miscue, sneaking her first goal of the season behind the homestanding keeper to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead.
The Corsairs extended their advantage in the 60th minute as senior Caroline Daubitz (Feeding Hills, Mass.) scored the eventual game-winner.
Salve Regina whittled its deficit to one goal three minutes later. Abigail Tepper put the hosts on the scoreboard, finishing a feed from Lindsey Mazzola.
Sophomore goalkeeper Allison Burke (Franklin, Mass.) earned her first collegiate victory, turning aside 10 attempts. Jessie Severino recorded eight stops in a losing effort for Salve Regina.
The Seahawks held a 21-12 advantage in shots and an 8-5 lead in penalty corners.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, when the Corsairs made their debut on Cressy Field against MIT.
