How it Happened
Westfield State struck early, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead when senior Holly Brouillette (Burlington, Mass.) beat UMass Dartmouth goalkeeper Allison Burke (Franklin, Mass.) on a breakaway score, winning the foot race with the Corsair defense. Both teams registered and even six shots and five saves apiece in the first half.
The Corsairs then turned the tides in the second frame. Senior Katelin Morrissey (Taunton, Mass.) put UMass Dartmouth on the board in the 42nd minute, shooting a cross-shot from the right side of the net and finding the far post.
The hosts outshot the Owls 11-4 in the second half, and the offensive attack would pay off before the final whistle, when Carden situated for a penalty corner. Passing the ball to Kish, the junior captain unloaded, blasting the ball through the Westfield State defense to put the game-winner in the cage.
Inside the Numbers
- Both goalkeepers put forth solid efforts, with Burke making key saves for seven total stops and Westfield State's Megan Fountaine (Scituate, Mass.) registering 11.
- Both teams racked up the corners, but UMass Dartmouth nearly doubled the Owls with 18 to the visitors' 10.
- Two Corsairs, Kish and sophomore Mary Brown (Leicester, Mass.), put six shots on goal for the game.
