When Bob Cosgrove (SMU '82) crossed the finish line at the 1982 NCAA Division III National Cross Country Championship race in 16th place he did more than earn Division III All-America honors. He also earned a spot in the then-Southeastern Massachusetts University record book with the second highest individual finish at that time in history. Cosgrove's finish helped Coach Bob Dowd's Corsairs to a 15th place finish at the NCAA championships that year, one of the top performances in the history of SMU's storied cross country program. The All-America performance at Nationals in 1982 capped an outstanding career for Cosgrove in both cross country and track and field. He competed all four seasons in both sports, earning numerous All-New England, All-East and All-New England Division III honors. His best individual performance in track and field was an 11th place finish in the 5000 meters at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
