Joseph Hummel (SMU '77) played soccer from 1973-76 as a four-year starter at fullback on a team which posted a 49-10-6 record. Hummel was a Colonial Conference all-star three times, his teams won four league championships and he played in two NAIA post-season tournaments. His senior team was the first SMU men's soccer squad to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. That season, Hummel was team captain for the 12-2 conference champion Corsairs who did not allow a goal against during regular season play and won 12 straight game as part of a 35-game unbeaten streak at home. Hummel was a Colonial Conference All-League fullback and Honorable Mention for the Soccer Coaches Association of NE Soccer team following his senior year. In previous seasons, Hummel had been a co-captain on an 11-3 team as a junior and the year before, his Corsairs captured the NAIA District 32 Southern New England Championship, advancing to the New England title game . As a freshman, he was part of a 15-2-1 team which played in the NAIA Tournament after earning All-Conference honors in his first season.
