A 1984 graduate of Southeastern Massachusetts University, Mark Montigny is best known for his many accomplishments within the world of Massachusetts politics. As an SMU student, Montigny served a one-year term as the Student Trustee to the SMU Board of Trustees. Following his graduation from SMU, he continued with his career as an elected official, having served as the State Senator from the Second Bristol and Plymouth District since 1993.
In addition to his political activity on campus, Montigny also had an outstanding career as a student-athlete under the direction of former track coach Bob Dowd. Montigny competed in track for the Corsairs for four seasons, twice winning the New England Division III championship in the 400 meter hurdles and twice qualifying and competing in the NCAA Division III National Championships. He holds the UMass Dartmouth 400 meter hurdle record of :53.8 set in 1981.
As a freshman in 1980, he was the top point-scorer on the SMU track team, capping his first season with a first-place finish in the Division III New
England championships. He was third in the Eastern Championships and 6th in the All Division New Englands, running 54.46, the top Div. III time in the meet. In his sophomore season, he was a perfect 7-0 in competition, captured a second consecutive NE Div. III championship with a time of 54.16. He earned a second 6th place in the Open New Englands and qualified for NCAA Division III Nationals for a second consecutive season.Â
After taking a year off from competition, Montigny returned to track and placed 4th in the NE Div. III in 1983. One year later, he completed his career, winning three straight dual and invitational meet during the regular season and qualifying for a fourth consecutive New England Division III championship.Â
