Attorney Kevin Phelan (SMU '74) played basketball at SMU for only three seasons, yet demonstrated his offensive prowess by finishing his career with 1,193 points from 1970-73, ranking him 24th on the Corsairs' all-time scoring list. In addition to his career scoring marks, Phelan's name is also scattered throughout the UMass Dartmouth men's basketball record book. Phelan holds the Corsair record for most field goals in a game with 19 against Husson College in 1972. His 40 points in that one game are also tied for second for most points scored in one game. His 22.1 points per game scoring average during the 1972-73 season is the fourth highest average in Corsair history, while his 20.9 points per game career scoring average is third best in program history. Attorney Phelan has remained a long-time supporter of the Corsair basketball program since graduating from SMU in 1974, while operating his own law practice in Fall River.
