Eric Lopes (UMass Dartmouth '93) holds the distinction of being a three-time New England NCAA Division III champion in the 110-meter hurdles. Serving as team captain for Coach Jon Hird's men's track and field teams during both his junior and senior seasons, Lopes dominated his event in both indoor and outdoor competitions. Lopes qualified for the NCAA Division III national championships on three occasions and also qualified for the NCAA indoor championships once. Lopes' best finish in the national competitions was a second place in the NCAA Division III outdoor championships at the end of the 1992 season. Despite having graduated 8 years ago, Lopes name is still prominent in the UMass Dartmouth track and field record book. Lopes holds university records in the 110-meter hurdles outdoors at: 14.54 seconds set in 1992 and the 55-meter hurdles indoors at :07.71 set in 1993.
